Description
Dill is a decorative plant with feathery foliage and yellow flowers. Can be planted in a flower border or a herb garden, and usually grown in masses.. Dill seeds are a common ingredient in pickles and sauces. It goes perfectly with fish dishes and can be mixed with mayonnaise to create a really tasty addition to a sandwich. Dill seed is also good for digestion.
It requires a site in full sun to give its best yield and will grow to a height of about 90cm (36").
Annual
When to Sow Dill Seeds
All year round on a windowsill March to June outdoors.
Where to Sow
Sow thinly direct outdoors where they are to crop, 1.5cm (½in) deep, into finely-prepared soil. Alternatively sow seeds in succession 1.5cm (1/2in) deep, in small pots of compost, lightly covering the seed with a sprinkling of compost on a warm light windowsill all year round. Tolerates most soils, but resists drought.
What to do next
Thin outdoor seedlings to 20cm (8") apart. Position in full sun.
Harvest
Indoor crops all year round Outdoor crops from May. Pick a few leaves, as required, from each plant so that they regrow quickly.
Handy Tip
Harvest the leaves when young for fresh use or drying. Later when the seeds are ripe and turn brown on outdoor crops, cut the stems, shake the seeds into a paper bag and dry indoors.
