Description
When to Sow Black Opal Tomatoes
January to April.
Where to Sow
Sow the seeds underglass 0.5cm (1/4 in) deep in pots or trays with a good seed sowing compost and lightly cover over with a sprinkling of vermiculite or compost. Place containers in a propagator at a temperature of 18-21°C. Seedlings should appear within 7-10 days.
What to do next
Prick out seedlings once big enough to handle, into 9cm pots. When the plants have reached 20cm tall, they can be planted into their final position. They can be planted into growbags, with 3 plants in each. If planting outside, harden off beforehand once all risk of frost has passed. Tomato plants generally grow earlier and bigger in a greenhouse because they prefer the warmth.
Water and feed the plants regularly with a high potash feed once the first truss has set.
As Black Opal tomatoes are a cordon variety, they will need supporting with canes or with wire and string.
Maturity
July to October.
Handy Tip
Pick fruits as they ripen and water regularly, but do not over water to help prevent the fruits from splitting.
Nutritional Values
High in vitamin C and lycopene.
Type
Indeterminate - Single stem, remove side shoots.
