Description
Mizuna has attractive dark green leaves on long white stems. You can Mizuna in salads or add to a stir-fry. It has a bitter peppery-like taste to it. Mizuna seeds are great as they can be sown all year round! They prefer fertile soil and light shade.
The interest in what we have classed liberally as "Oriental Vegetables" increases every year. They can be used raw in salads, or lightly cooked for use in stir frys and numerous Chinese style meals. We hope you will be tempted to give something different a try.
When to Sow Mizuna Seeds
All year round.
Where to Sow
Sow thinly in a prepared seed bed 0.5cm (1/4in) deep in rows 25-30cm (10-12in) apart. Keep soil moist . Sow seed in succession every 2-3 weeks for a continuous supply of fresh young leaves.
What to do next
Cut leaves from each plant leaving some leaves on each so they re-grow. You will often get 3-4 cuttings per plant.
Maturity
All year round.
Handy Tip
Early autumn and winter sowings can be made in containers in a cold greenhouse. Or if short of space during the year, sow seeds thinly into containers on a sunny patio.
Nutritional Values
High in Vitamin C, folate and iron. It also contains powerful anti-oxidants.
