Description
Vit is a very vigorous variety for spring and autumn crops as well as overwintering. It produces long oval, glossy green leaves with a delicious tender mild minty flavour.
Lambs Lettuce makes a good addition to winter salads, but use sparingly as it has a bitter taste. Vit is also mildrew-resistant.
When to Sow 'Vit' Corn Salad Seeds
August to October.
Where to Sow
Sow thinly in a prepared seed bed 0.5cm (1/4in) deep in rows 25-30cm (10-12in) apart.
What to do next
Gradually thin seedlings to 15cm (6in) apart, picking the young leaves as baby salad leaves . Alternatively leave plants till fully mature and the cut whole plant. Plants will benefit from cloche protection through the winter to prolong the harvest period.
Harvest
November to January.
Handy Tip
Can also be spring sown. Make sure plants are kept moist at all times to prevent them running to seed too quickly during hot weather.
