Description

Chicory seeds - Palla Rossa is often called "Radicchio" in Britain. This variety has firm hearts with red/maroon and white leaves for colour in salads.
The red colouration deepens as the days shorten and temperatures drop. Immature, mainly green leaves can be used in 'baby salad.'

Chicory is a salad addition similar to lettuce but with a distinct flavour. It is slightly bitter in taste but the blanching of the leaves lessens this bitterness.

When to Sow Palla Rossa 'Radicchio' Seeds

April to August.

Where to Sow

Outdoors: Sow the Radicchio seeds thinly where they are to crop, 1.5cm (½") deep, directly into finely-prepared soil, in rows spaced 30cm (12in) apart. These can also be sown underglass early in the year or in autumn into modules filled with seed sowing compost and transplanted out , filling vacant spaces on the plot.

What to do Next

Thin out direct sown seedlings to 25-30cm (10-12in) apart between the plants. Keep well watered in dry spells. Transplant modules to the same spacings as above.

Harvest

June to October.kings

Handy Tip

Modules can be transplanted in the autumn under cloches or polytunnels to extend the cropping season.
